All About Me

We have just started our new project on the Human Body which the children are very excited about as I have lots of fun activities planned, including a field trip to the All About Me Gallery at Eureka!  Today we began by looking closely in the mirror at our faces, and we talked about our hair and eye colour. We measured our height and searched our shoes to find shoe sizes.

The children then drew self portraits of themselves
onto a piece of A3 paper, folded in half to make a book.

Tabitha's self portrait

Can you guess which Young Hosanna this is?

Inside the folded book, Nathanael and Tabitha wrote some facts, that they thought were important about themselves. These are Nathanael's facts...

Tabitha's facts...

We are moving on to find out about the function of the brain this week and to
explore our five senses.

"I will praise you; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
marvellous are your works; and that my soul knows right well."
Psalm 139:14

Trees

Inspired by a lovely walk through a park the children and I went on today, and a book we borrowed from the library, we have made our own tree books.

I cut out the silhouette of a tree and made them each a book.
(I hope you can see that the tree spilts across the four pages.)

The children then decorated the tree with leaves, each section depicting a different season.

The pages open up to show some written work about each season.

I hope to do a lot more nature work with the children this year.  They love spending time outdoors and it is such a joy to share the beauty of God's creation with them.

"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper." Psalm 1:1-3

Our Week

We have enjoyed a quiet week; sticking to our morning schedule of school work and outings and in the afternoons we have been embarking upon a Spring clean throughout the house.
The children on the whole enjoy helping. Nathanael even said this week "I love doing chores!!!"
I just had to write that one down, so I could remind him of it!

 Sisters sharing a book together...

Nathanael has been excited about completing some LegoQuest challenges.
This is challenge number 4, making a two dimensional design out of lego.

The weather has been quite a bit warmer than last week, so we have made the most of it and visited Marple Memorial Park...

and our family day this week was to Merebrook Reservoir near Leek. This is one of our favourite places for a day out. It has a great play park, walks and beautiful views of the reservoir
(and a coffee shop serving delicious flapjack!)

Nathanael playing in the snow drifts at the park...

Other things we have done that have not been photographed...
  • We have started studying the book of Exodus in our Morning Bible Time, which is full of familiar stories the children enjoy.
  • The children had fun participating in a rabbit hunt at Poynton Library and each won a little chocolate egg for their efforts.
  • On Bank Holiday Monday, my mum and I went to a local carboot sale.  I managed to get some very good bargains for the children as I buy most of their clothes, toys and books second hand.

Spring Project

Over the last two weeks, we have been working on a Spring Project. The children have visited a farm to see newborn animals, read books from the library and watched YouTube videos on the lifecyles of different animals and spotted signs of spring at our local parks.

This video shows the children's finished work.

Our Week

It's been a cold week, but we've still managed to get out and about and enjoy the snow!

One of our favourite places for a Sunday afternoon walk is Broadbottom.

Our boiler broke down three times this week, which left us without central heating and hot water, but we are fortunate to have a coal fire in the Side Room so school re-located there!

The Battle of Waterloo was the subject of this week's History lesson.
Nathanael's interpretation of events in pictures...

...and Tabitha's.

Abigail was back at the Children's Hospital in Manchester on Tuesday for a CT scan under sedation.
Despite long delays and having to go without food or drink for most of the day, she was a trooper!
Granny stayed at home with three of the children and kept them busy with varied activities,
including Marble Run.

New shoes! An Easter gift from Granny.

As part of our Spring project we visited Reddish Vale Farm.

It was exciting to see the newborn animals.
...Nathanael (the bravest of the children!) feeding a calf.

We had a morning out at a soft play place. How many Young Hosannas can you spot in the ball pool?

Despite all the fun outings we have had this week, we have spent time considering the real meaning of Easter in our school and Bible times.
The sun shone on Stockport on Good Friday as the whole of the Gospel of Mark was read aloud by Paul (Daddy) and free Bibles and Gospel leaflets were given away.

Maths Fun

Because Maths is Nathanael's least favourite subject, I have started to plan some practical activities to try and engage his interest.

Over the past week, we have collected data on the emergency vehicles that pass our house.

Here is Nathanael with his tally chart, showing that more ambulances than police cars and fire engines have sped past!

Together we constructed a graph to show the results.

Cowboy Project

One of the most exciting aspects of Home Education is the fact you are not bound by a set curriculum, but can explore your child's interests and natural desires to learn. Nathanael's current interest is in Cowboys, so we have just completed our latest project on this subject.

Here are some of the things we have done...

Nathanael had fun lassoing Horatio the horse in the garden.

We located the United States of America on our globe and found the Western states.
(Abigail in cat ears!)

We compiled our work into lapbooks...
