Our Week

All in all we have had a lovely week, making the most of the warm weather when it came. Having not done much formal schooling, the children however have learned much through adventuring and playing in the outdoors.

 

We have had our first BBQ of the year,

 



 

imagined we were at the seaside in Bruntwood Park,

 

 

explored the walled gardens at Chadkirk Chapel,

 

 

 

 

 

enjoyed making music  

 

 

and discovered more about our British History.

Paul and I took Abigail to her appointment at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool this week. It has finally been decided that she will need surgery to relieve her double aortic valve and vascular ring, and it has been scheduled for September.

The Heart - Human Body Project

 

As a continuation of our project on the Human Body, we have focused on the heart.

 

The body contains 5.2 litres of blood, so as a practical Maths activity

 the children measured out that amount of water.

 

 

We borrowed a water pump from the Gateway library, constructed it and discussed how the function of the heart is to pump blood around the body. We first tried to take our pulses when resting and then after exercise.  This was harder than I imagined and I only managed to find Nathanael's pulse. There was no way that they could find each others! Since that experiment was a bit of  flop, we spent the time talking about how the heart beats faster when active, to supply the body with oxygenated blood and we clapped the rhythm of resting and active heartbeats.

 

Nathanael wrote up what he had learned about the heart and Tabitha did some handwriting practice.

 

 

Looking at the artist Jim Dine, we created some heart paintings in his style.

 

 

With my younger children, we used this opportunity to revise the heart shape and the colours red and pink. I also made a simple Maths heart game for them to play in the garden, where they matched numbers to spots.

 

 

To finish off, we baked heart shaped biscuits.

Our regular Home Education days are filled with library visits, 

 

 

handwriting practice,

(Abigail is very keen to learn to write like her older brother and sister)

 

 

spelling tests

 

 

and reading lessons.

 

 

The girls are now pros at baking scones and can follow the recipe with only a little help from me.

 

 

The highlight of the week for the children was the Postal Bible School prize giving.

 

 

Prizes were awarded for all the hard work they have put into their lessons throughout the year.

 

 

Nathanael was awarded the Primary Shield 2013 for achieving 100%.

 

 

A lovely morning was had with Auntie Charlotte at Run of the Mill soft play, Gateway home education group was enjoyable as always and it was great to meet new friends at the ex JWs for Jesus day held at our church.

Our Week

The sun has been shining this week and we have had been making the most of it. We have enjoyed visiting some local parks and had our first picnic of the year! Yum!

 



 



 

We have been taking a little break from schooling these last two weeks while our decluttering and spring cleaning projects were still ongoing. The aim is to be back onto our full school schedule next week.  However the children were keen to keep up with their History lessons, learning about The Charge of the Light Brigade

 

 

and Missionary David Livingstone.

 

 

Abigail and I took a trip to the Children's Hospital in Manchester to see the cardiologist. The diagnosis for her heart condition is Double Aortic Arch. Thankfully, it doesn't require immediate surgery like we were first told, but she is going to be watched carefully over the next few months and then a decision will then be made with the cardiologists at Alder Hey Children's Hospital as to what treatment she will require.
